EU Public Health Programme 2003-2008

Date: 2003-06-20

Following consultation with many organisations concerned about health matters, including the European Region, the EU Public Health programme was launched last month.

Those interested were encouraged to submit proposals for projects to influence European Health Policy and make application for funding from this EU programme. Unfortunately the time period for application was only 2 months making it very difficult to be realistic about participation, but there will be annual allocation of funds for projects within specified subject areas.

The work programme is divided into four main priority areas, and the wider interests of the profession could be applied to many different aspects. In general terms the physiotherapy profession would support the concept of a 'Health Lifestyle for each European Citizen' and the following can be highlighted for members of the European Region to consider:

  • Health promotion strategies in different locations such as schools, workplace, communities and families.
  • Prevention of injuries.
  • Health needs of Elderly People
  • Health and EU Accession countries
  • Information exchange on Best Practice and Effectiveness
