DETAILS | The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy has 142 staff employees and a full time Chief Executive. The Society holds regular executive meetings and also liaises with other health care professions and authorities. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy is also a trade union representing its members. Membership is open to students and physiotherapy assistants. International physiotherapists who are not eligible to join the CSP can use the 'Global Network' service to access CSP resources. INFORMATION AND NUMBERS | There are 35 physiotherapy schools in the country with about 6.800 students enrolled. Studies result either in a BSc (Hons) degree or a Pre-Registration Masters, however the minimum entry level requirement remains the BSc (Hons level). BSc studies take 3 years in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and 4 years in Scotland. There are post-registration opportunities for further study at Masters and PhD level. Physiotherapists are involved in both teaching and research. The UK has recognition of physiotherapy specialists with the establishment of clinical specialst and consultant physiotherapist posts. |

TITLE AND REGULATIONS ON THE PROFESSION | Professional Title/ Qualification: BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy. The title 'Physiotherapist' is protected by the state. The national authority legally responsible for the regulation of the profession in the UK is the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Physiotherapists must be registered with the HCPC and obtain a licence to practice. Legislation also requires that they meet the HCPC's generic standards of proficiency, conduct and performance. Re-registration is linked to an assessment of continuing professional development every two years. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy has established a code of Members' Professional Values and Behaviour and the CSP standards. There are limited employment opportunities at some grades and in some specialities for physiotherapists at the moment. |

INSURANCE AND PRACTICE REGULATIONS | Physiotherapy services in the UK are determined by the profession. The physiotherapist has clinical autonomy. Physiotherapists practise in clinical, educational, leadership and research environments. The UK offers both public and private physiotherapy services. Insurance cover for physiotherapy treatment is paid mainly through the National Health Service which is a tax based health system. |

The British Association established a twinning program with the Czech Republic 2000-2003 (yearly cost not estimated). No governmental/EU funding has been obtained. |
